Turning up the Heat on Electrical Testing and remaining legally complaint

Thermal Imaging is one of the core services of Protest ES Ltd and is an essential part within the scope of electrical testing compliance services that we offer to clients on a nationwide basis.

Thermal Imaging is essential to any site as it allows our engineers to capture certain dangers that ‘visually’ are impossible to detect, these are commonly known as ‘hot spots’. We can provide clients with a ‘stand alone’ Thermal Imaging service or this service can also be carried out at the same time alongside the EICR Fixed Wire Inspection and Testing. Our engineers will carry out Thermal Imaging to various areas of site such as distribution hoards, LV transformers, switch panels, fixed electrical equipment supplies and smaller consumer units.

When our Thermal Imaging captures high temperatures above the allowed legal parameters this then provides the client clear evidence of immediate, imminent or possible future problems, all of which are deemed as a serious fire risk. There are a number of reasons why electrical components have these types of issues, often caused by loose connections, fatigue, incorrect installation or they may be defective.

Thermal Imaging should always be carried out whilst the site is at ‘full load’ ie: normal working conditions, this means that the ‘hot spots’ will present themselves and be easily identified. The ‘covers’ or ‘doors’ to the electrical equipment will always be removed in order to gain the best results from the Thermal Imaging. Our detailed Thermal Imaging reports will contain data of all the equipment that has been inspected, photographs of the issues and clear concise explanations of the problems identified. The duty holder or the person(s) deemed responsible for site maintenance can then take immediate action on the defects identified to eliminate the risks.

The images shown perfectly demonstrate ‘hot spots’ that our engineers recently found within some distribution boards. These images were found inside a data centre ‘server farm’ for a major UK Bank and without immediate attention pose a serious fire risk. Our client was notified of these issues immediately and corrective action was implemented with an instruction for our engineers to carry out the repairs shortly after.
