Do not consult an electrical contractor without accreditation/qualifications
Choosing an electrician can sometimes feel like a difficult challenge. For those of you outside of the world of wires and circuit breakers, the various terminology and qualifications electricians use can put you in a spin.
If you’ve been looking into electricians, you’ll notice that some proudly claim NICEIC certification, whilst others don’t mention it at all.
Check the 'Competent Persons Register'
There is also a good website where you can check that your chosen electrician is qualified. The Registered Competent Person Website provides information for people to find a registered and competent electrician in their area.
On the website, you can also check to make sure that the company you are planning on using is registered. Only electricians who meet core technical standards defined by the government will be listed on the ‘Competent Person Electrical Register.’
What is the NICEIC?
NICEIC regulates the training and work of electrical enterprises in the UK. NICEIC is one of several providers given Government approval to offer Competent Person Schemes to oversee electrical work within the electrical industry.
Electrical contractors register with the organisation to become approved contractors, meeting the NICEIC's specification of training. If work undertaken by the approved contractor is not up-to-standard, the NICEIC will correct it if necessary.
What are the risks of using an unregistered electrician?
An unregistered electrician might do a good job, they may also do a bad job. But what they definitely won’t do is present you with a Building Regulations compliance certificate, which is required by law for all notifiable work. It can be easy to get caught out by a builder or someone else who seems competent, and assures you that they do this all the time.
