Calamitous Council Compliance leaves the ‘door open’ for injury or fire

Here at Protest ES Ltd we are proud to partner with various councils across the UK. We carry out various electrical statutory compliance services, remedial works and installation projects for these clients in addition to the fire safety services that we also provide.

Our engineers were recently testing for a large council based within the London borough to one of their public libraries. In the grounds outside the library our engineers were extremely surprised to discover the door was wide open and not locked thus exposing the electrical equipment inside.

This meant that this was easily accessible by members of the public, obviously exposure to the weather and to vermin such as rats and mice. Our site contact was made aware of the issues straight away and our engineers made the situation safe immediately and secured the door.

Unfortunately we come across serious issues such as this on an almost daily basis. In the event of an incident, injury or fire caused by an electrical fault the duty holder(s) or the person(s) deemed responsible the electrical maintenance of the site(s) would need to demonstrate to the investigators that they complied with the latest guidance and law of the land.

Failure to comply can result in heavy fines and in some cases jail sentences. Lack of budget or time is not excepted as a reasonable excuse, there are no compromises or short cuts when it comes to health and safety.
