Ensure your home is lit safely this Christmas!

will you be going all out this year...

As we welcome the Christmas period, we will be dusting off and putting our lights and decorations up. After an entire year of being stored away, Christmas lights can easily become unsafe. Here are some tips to keep your home safe, whilst being bright and festive.

To help prevent the most common electrical problems with Christmas lights, there are some simple but essential safety measures to take.

Never

· Use lights outdoors unless they are specially designed for this use

· Connect different lighting sets together

· Cover lights directly, e.g. Presents or decorations resting on tree lights

· Remove or insert lamps while the chain is connected to the supply

· Overload sockets (try to avoid the use of extension leads)

· Use lights that are damaged or faulty

Always

· Follow the manufacturers' instructions

· Thoroughly check lights are not damaged before use, and inspect for loose wires

· Ensure replacement bulbs are of the same type as those originally supplied

· Make sure all outdoor lights are connected with effective protected sockets

· Switch lights off and unplug them before you go to bed or leave the house

· Keep lights away from flammable decorations and items

If you take these precautions, you can put your mind at rest, being able to enjoy your Christmas lights and the festive period.
